Whenyoufirstinstallthefirewall,youhavetochosebetweenSimpleand
Advancedmode.Thedifferencebetweenthemcouldbeexplainedbetter.An
articleinPCmagazinenotedthatthefirewallactuallyhasthreemodesof
operation,nottwo.IoptedforAdvancedmodebecausesimplemodesounded
likeitdidnotofferanyoutboundprotection.Ifthisistrue,thenitseems
uselessforWindowsXPSP2users.

Thisisfurtherconfusedbythefactthatthereisbothafreeandpaid
versionoftheSunbeltKeriofirewall.So,anewuser,withno
documentation(exceptthatshownintheinitialdialogattheright)hasto
chosebetweentwo(reallythree)modesofoperationandjustthefeatures
inthefreeversionoralsotheadditionalfeaturesinthepaidversion.
HowthesethingsmixandmatchisimpossibletofigureoutwiththeSunbelt/
Keriofirewall.ZoneAlarmdoesthismuchbetter.Whenyoustarttoinstall
ZoneAlarmitasksifyouwanttoenabletheadvancedfeaturesinthepaid
versionforabrieftrialperiod.Simpleandclear.Also,ZoneAlarmdoesn't
addtheextracomplexityandconfusionof"modes"ofoperationsthatare
notwellexplained.Insteaditjusthasarangeofconfigurationoptionsthat
youcanchangeatwill.And,it'sdefaultsareprettywellchosen.
